Greaton, a real estate developer known for its iconic landmarks, contracted MBM to undertake cost management services for the completion of The Ribbon. Designed by Hassell and incorporating the W Hotel, the development sits on the Gadigal lands of the coastal Eora people who once used the harbour for food and transport up the Parramatta River.

The long-awaited $1B development includes 585 hotel rooms spread across 25 floors and features a two-storey rooftop bar with an infinity pool. The waterfront experience is also home to the IMAX and integrates significant upgrades to the public domain including a new playground and amenities to service the Darling Harbour area. The project is expected to bring renewed life to the Darling Harbour precinct – one that attracts an estimated 26 million visitors annually.

The scope of services provided on the project included assistance with the novation process of construction, cost estimation services, and ongoing support with variation assessments.

MBM’s project team was led by Founding Director David Madden, Director David Shlom, and Executive Quantity Surveyor Kenny Toplis. Speaking on the project, Kenny discussed the significance of being involved in the major development and a part of Darling Harbour’s history.

“Our team are proud to have supported Greaton on the completion of The Ribbon, and we’re excited to see the complex transform the Darling Harbour precinct.”

“Following the project’s recent completion, we know excitement is high and we’re pleased to have brought our cost planning experience to this stunning architectural feat,” he added.

The Ribbon has finished construction and opened to the public in October 2023.
